My boobs are much smaller than they used to be, but a lot of this still resonates:

BBC My Big Breasts and Me

I really quite like how they show everything - including how to properly size and fit a bra, to how the surgery works, including showing pictures of the bruising and scaring. Very, very educational and interesting. I also liked how the physical therapist went right to the spots that always hurt on my back and shoulders. Small wonder I'm a total massage slut.

I'm still not sure what I want to do with my tits. I used to want a reduction, but now I sort of want a refill. I don't mind the size they are now, but the shape could be a bit, um, rounder.

I quit believing in sin years before I quit believing in God.

Or so I thought. Apparently I still have my own internal concept of sin, one that has chosen this moment to resurface and apply itself to a whole new set of behaviors independent of traditional religious context. Morals don't require religion, I don't think. I'm pretty sure other people have use for them too, and that the monopoly of them by the church leadership has been entirely unnecessary.

What is this new sin I've discovered within my own behavior? I shit you not - the consumption of plastic. Not so much the consumption of plastic (since that would be a bit upsetting) as much as the wanton disposal of plastic. It tears at me every time I have to throw a perfectly usable container away because there are simply just too many of them, more than I'll ever be able to use. Ever. So I throw them out, but I feel guilty when I do it because tossing potentially useful items is the most senseless and wasteful thing I can think of.

I mean, really - what is trash?

All right, so you can obviously tell I'm back in the Philosophy department when I start debating the great meaning of debris, but seriously - think about it for a moment. Trash may be one of the most important concepts of modern humanity. Not only because we're running out of places to put it but also because it says something about our values.

A friend sent me an article the other day about all these container ships sitting idle off the coast of Malaysia. Capitalism is crumbling. People are pulling back, spending less money on stuff. And this is supposedly helping make the economy implode. But it's hard to cheer for the cure when it means adopting the entire value system of consumption and disposal (not to mention exploitation) that holds it all together. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when our economy is built on the purchase of stuff. "Disposable" stuff at that.

Let's take another look at that word, 'disposable'. That means we can throw it away, right? It was MADE to be thrown away. It's PURPOSE is to be thrown away. Allow me a moment to step back and just say, WTF? Where does it go? Where is this mythical 'away' that we speak of? Nothing in nature is made to be disposable, that I know of. I could be wrong, and I welcome you to correct me. But it seems that most everything has a natural lifespan, after which it reenters the cycle of life in another form by decomposing or transforming into something different, like dinner for something bigger.

Except for all this 'disposable' plastic trash. It just kind of sits there. Or floats there. Or hangs there, depending. And it never goes away. Nothing ever goes away. It's always here, in some form. Some more obvious than others. And it's no good for dinner because it's poison. But we eat it anyway because we're choking ourselves with it. It's everywhere and we can't get away from it. Not only do we store our food in it, but now it looks like it is getting into our food itself directly via ingestion.

Sometimes I think about the movie Waterworld (gee, if only I had a nickle for every time I'd started a sentence that way!) and picture a similar future; not one in which we're scavengers floating on endless oceans of blue water but rather on endless oceans of trash. Whole occupations and industries will spring up around the retrieval and creative recycling of our collective I-don't-give-a-fuck-it's-convenient-let's-toss-it-out-and-get-another-one madcap spending spree.

One of these days, someone is gonna have to clean up this mess. I wonder how they'll do it?

Waste - I propose it to be the 8th deadly sin. Frankly, I'm surprised the churches haven't jumped on this one already. It goes well with the traditional protestant work ethic and all those values emphasizing thrift and modesty. Waste not, want not. These ideals used to rank pretty high in this country. After the last Great Depression, that is. Funny how the more things change the more they stay the same.

Crap. Here we go again. For background, see the SFGate  article here.

A plea for HELP to save a place for Sexual Expression - The Newly Re-Opened Power Exchange in San Francisco, 34 Mason St.

From Mike Power's Mom, Joyce Judge <JoyceJudge@Hotmail.com>

Subject: HELP
Date: Sep 17, 2009 7:50 PM PDT
To all those of you who are loyal patrons and who believe in assuring our freedoms I beg of you to unite . Power Exchange is in a fight for the life of our clubs. Today the SF building and fire department showed up again and are trying to stop us from continuing business. Micheal has decided to publicly fight for our rights by defying their order and opening tonight and tomorrow and through the weekend.....he is prepareded to get citations and go to jail if necessary.....

As his mother I beg each and every one of you to contact any and all people you know who support our position and ask you to take it to the streets....San Fran has not had a good pickit line in a long time especially such a rainbow colored one....its time to line up and tell the city to support us by telling them if they dont want you in side the club you will take to the streets......I am sure this could turn into a great moment and even show that this city still has that politiical edge.

We either stand together now or both of our clubs will fail. Mike has been holding on this last year and it has cost him his home, and now we are faced with loosing both of our clubs. We have used all of our personal finances to get this new club open in SF and we are close to loosing Las Veges as a result of reopening in SF.

If you want to help........start today.....make a sign, send an email, get to the front door, organize a rally of all who enjoy the play space, the life style, let the city know we want to stay and that we are not going any where.........with out a fight......it takes effort to make a legend like PE a reality...we worked for over thirteen years to put PE on the map..... dont let a couple of assholes take it away from all of us......

thanks in advance mama joyce

Now, admittedly, I wasn't exactly a regular of the Power Exchange while it was open. In fact, I only went once, but I always intended to go back. Mostly it was a matter of time, distance, and circumstance that kept me from going. But, goddammit, I want there to be a legal sex club in San Francisco. It just doesn't make sense to ban it. We's good folks. Really.

During the mayhem of the fire, they were forced to put animals anywhere they could, since they had run out of crates large enough for the fawn. The kitten ran to the fawn, and it was instant bonding.

Oh my god, this is the hottest thing I've ever seen. It should be the dorkiest, but somehow it ends up being so good it becomes cool. I am a huge, big, tremendous fan of Led Zeppelin, but I don't think I've ever heard but one remake that didn't make me cringe. Until now. Are you ready for this?

Cue the accordions:

I think I just got wet. No, no think about it - my panties would be sopping if I were wearing any. Something about a hot chick with an accordion belting out Zeppelin with all the enthusiasm and passion it deserves; oh be still my beating heart!

Conan O'Brien rightly noticed that @AKGOVSarahPalin's often incomprehensible twitstream was, in fact, stream of consciousness poetry and he brought in the right team for the job to demonstrate.

Must be something in the air. It figures that the same day I discover electronic cigarettes, the FDA has itself a little pow-wow on the same topic.

http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/PublicHealthFocus/ucm172906.htm

Mainly they seem to be upset that these products are being marketed and sold without any government approval or control whatsoever.

We found so far that the products weâ??ve reviewed meet the definition of both the drug and the device under the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act and therefore weâ??ve refused them to - weâ??ve refused to admit these products into the United States because theyâ??re not the subject of an approved drug or device application. To date we have refused 50 shipments of e-cigarettes and we are actively reviewing a number more.

(Matt Perrone): So it sounds like from what youâ??re saying these products never should have been allowed on the market to begin with. Was there some oversight that they were, you know, they were entering commerce to begin with? It sounds like theyâ??re just plain illegal.

Michael Levy: Well I mean there are a number of ways for these products to get into the United States without them being properly declared for FDA review. Again the ones that we have reviewed weâ??ve found to be illegally marketed and we have reviewed - refused those products.

(Matt Perrone): Okay and what would these companies have to do for them to be legally marketed if they had submitted, you know, PMAs, pre-market applications? Would - would they be legal then?

Joshua Sharfstein: It would depend for what purpose, this is Josh Sharfstein, but if they were interested in having them marketed as a smoking cessation device they could submit an application that demonstrates that itâ??s safe and effective for that use.

(Matt Perrone): I see. To your knowledge have any - have any done that?

Joshua Sharfstein: Not to my knowledge.

To kids. And that they might not be health products. And that the dosage is inconsistent.

The agency is concerned that

e-cigarettes can increase nicotine addiction among young people and may lead kids to try other tobacco products, including conventional cigarettes, which are known to cause disease and lead to premature death
the products may contain ingredients that are known to be toxic to humans
* because clinical studies about the safety and efficacy of these products for their intended use have not been submitted to FDA, consumers currently have no way of knowing 1) whether e-cigarettes are safe for their intended use, or 2) about what types or concentrations of potentially harmful chemicals or what dose of nicotine they are inhaling when they use these products.

--Consumer Update: FDA Warns of Health Risks Posed by E-Cigarettes

Fair enough. So they tested some. Final Report on FDA Analyses [pdf, 237KB]

Test Products:

Njoy e-cigarette (Reference 1) with various cartridges

Smoking Everywhere Electronic Cigarette (Reference 2) with various cartridges

Nicotrol Inhaler, 10mg cartridge was used as a control for some test methods

And found out that yeah, they had nicotine, and yeah, they had some other not so good stuff, too. Now, there's a big surprise. But what I really want to know, is how do they stack up against regular old cigarettes, healthwise? I mean, I'll take one or two carcinogens over hundreds. Any day.

It will be interesting to see how future studies play out. And who pays for them. I can't imagine Big Tobacco not pulling out all the stops and all the strings to keep these new players out of their previously captive customer pool.

Wow. I was looking for something like this for years when I still smoked tobacco. Regularly, that is. Burning Man and trips to Europe don't count.

Blu Electronic Cigarettes are smokeless, ashless, tarless, and most importantly - buttless. No mess, no trash. Other than the occasional cartridge. They even charge up on your computer's USB port! Rumor has it they're even more affordable than traditional cigarettes but frankly, I was too lazy to do the math.

Okay, scratch that; here are some numbers:

Cartridges come in packs of 5. Each pack is equal to 75 cigarettes.
A Carton is 5 packs or 25 cartridges. Each carton is equal to 350 cigarettes.

1 Carton (25 cartridges) $25.00

2 Cartons (50 cartridges) $45.00

4 Cartons (100 cartridges) $80.00

Seems to be a pretty good deal, since I vaguely remember traditional 200 count cartons running about $35 a pop on sale, for about $0.18 a smoke, whereas these run $0.07 per unit.

I also think these would be bad-ass for trying to quit smoking, although I'm not even sure why you'd want to after switching to these. Although that 10 flash warning light when you've been using it "too much" might be incentive... (check out the How it Works section on their site for an informational video)

Now all they need is to make them for pot and I'd be a happy camper. Er, smoker. Er, vaporizer.

I kind of wish I was still a tobacco user, so I could try these out. If you are a current smoker, do lemme know how these are if you do manage to try them when they become available for order again. Hopefully they get their backlog cleared out by August 1st as promised.

And yes, I thought these were so cool, I immediately signed up for an affiliate account so that I could get money for hawking them on my blog. No point in doing it for free. Especially since I don't even smoke anymore. Much.

Fascinating article. Without it, I'd never have known about the cloaca, a kind of all in one excretory excitory hole in some species.

"There are also a variety of fishes, as well as polychaete worms and even crabs, that are specialized to take advantage of the constant flow of water through the cloacal respiratory tree of sea cucumbers while simultaneously gaining the protection of living within the sea cucumber itself. At night many of these species emerge from the anus of the sea cucumber in search of food. [6]" - Wikipedia

Oh, wait - there's more!

"Human beings only have an embryonic cloaca, which is split up into separate tracts during the development of the urinary and reproductive organs. However, a few human congenital disorders result in persons being born with a cloaca, including persistent cloaca and Sirenomelia (mermaid syndrome)" - Wikipedia
On the island of Lokrum, Croatia there are many big birds. Peahens, mostly.

And a few horny peacocks.

I found them by the noise they were making ruffling their tail feathers and wafting the fumes at the ladies. At first I thought the sound was rattlesnakes. Never heard anything like it.
Hands down, the most interesting thing I saw all day. And that's saying something. Some genius set up an organ under the dock near the ocean that plays when the ocean waves wash into it. Too cool. You might want to turn your sound down slightly, as my camera doesn't pick up audio very well...
One of the local radio stations I listen to in the car is running a "PYT" (pretty young thang) contest. The family who sends in the cutest baby picture wins a trip to London to see Michael Jackson. Now, I'm not exactly the queen of appropriate behavior, but --- are you kidding me?

Who set up this promotion, anyway? If I were a suspicious person, I'd say Michael was trolling.

MOViN'S BAY AREA PYT!
http://www.movin997.com/pages/167515.php

Does your baby have what it takes to be the cutest and most adorable infant in the Bay Area? If he or she does, you could score a trip of a lifetime: a trip to London, England to experience one of the SOLD OUT Michael Jackson Farewell Shows at the O2 Arena in September!

Uh huh. A trip of a lifetime. I'll bet.
